With all of the requirements being met (and even the addition that she had really long legs, just like Jack), the only thing that stands out is his gender: Jack is a guy and Joan is a girl. Joan died in 1431, long before things in Christmas Town were used to celebrate the holiday Fortunately, even though Christmas started being celebrated in 000 AC, modern Christmas traditions didn't start until much later, the earliest being the Christmas tree, which started being used in 1605. This checks off two of the required factors for Jack's living identity, but it challenges the Christmas factor, because Joan was Catholic and Christmas is a Christian holiday. There have been a few disowned saints of the Catholic church, but the one that stands out the most is Joan of Arc because she was burned to death, just like it's believed Jack Skellington died. In order for someone to be so important in Halloween Town, how could they be associated with a day originally used to celebrate saints? How about a fallen saint? This evolved into All Saints Day, a 3-day celebration starting on October 31st and ending on November 2nd (which would eventually turn into Halloween and Dia de los Muertos). Celts believed that during this time, the living world and the dead world coexisted, and that specifically on October 31st, ghosts of the dead came back to earth. Halloween started as a Celtic festival celebrated at the end of the summer, which was a time associated with human death. To start, Nightmare Before Christmas' official wiki says Jack's age is unknown, so we can't use numbers to find out when he died, so instead I decided to do some research on Halloween. They need to have died by being burned to death They need to be considered "evil" so they would end up in Halloween Town They can't know modern Christmas traditions (hence why Jack was shocked by Christmas Town) To figure out who Jack was, I followed a certain set of criteria that the person had to have: I know that sounds like it's coming out of nowhere, but here me out: That made me think "Well, if Jack used to be alive and was burned to death, who was he? How did he become big enough to be King of the Pumpkin Patch?" I didn't know if there'd be a solid answer, but after doing research I found a shockingly accurate response: I believe that Jack Skellington, when he was alive, was Joan of Arc. ![]() The most supported theory is that he was burned alive because of the opening sequence where he is introduced on fire and jumps into a water fountain. I doubt that would happen, but I might as well take my shot)Ī common theory about Nightmare Before Christmas is how Jack Skellington died, since he's a human skeleton and is assumed not to be born into Halloween Town. (Also to Matt and Stephanie: You mentioned being interested in people who write theories, if somehow you see this, I would absolutely love to talk more theories! I'm a big film fan I'm one of the youth, so I know a lot about modern movies and early 2000s media. In today's meme review MatPat and Steph encouraged us to share our theories, so I thought I'd finally share some theories I've made, starting with the one I have the most research behind and on a movie I love dearly: Nightmare Before Christmas
